LAD #1: Mayflower Compact & Fundamental Orders of Connecticut

1) What concepts are included in the Mayflower Compact?
The Mayflower Compact is a written pact by the first settlers at New Plymouth Virginia. It states their loyalty to their mother country, their King, and religions. These settlers wrote that they would establish a democratic government that would help to better their Colony.

2) How does the Mayflower Compact reflect and attachment to both the "Old" and "New" worlds?
The settlers pledged their loyalty to the mother country and King, and promised to remain part of the Christian Faith. Their Ordinances, Acts, and Constitutions reflected those of British, and "Old World" laws. However by including some parts of democracy into their government, the settlers undertook some ideals of the "New World" as well.

3) How did the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut differ from the Mayflower Compact?
The main difference between these two documents is very apparent. While the Mayflower Compact states the settlers promise to remain faithful to their religion and to establish a new government, the Fundamental Orders provides a structure of how that will be done. The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut is based more heavily on the settlers remaining truthful to their god instead of their King which was outlined in the Mayflower Compact.

4) What prompted the colonists of Connecticut to take this approach to government, i.e.: use of a written Constitution?
The colonists settled in Connecticut as a result of their unjust treatment because of their Puritan religion. When they came to Connecticut they feared the harsh judgement of a monarch run government so they included democratic aspects in their constitution and government.

5) In what significant way(s) does the Fundamental Orders reflect a fear of and safeguard against the usurping of power by one person or a chosen few?
Remember to include a related photo for each document.
The Fundamental Orders set up two General Assemblies so no one person or group could gain too much power. This was similar to the checks and balances systems we have now. They wanted to separate themselves from their previous government which was a monarchy ruled by a king. This way the people could rule together instead of one man in power.
